Most people assume that when Salesforce generates an AI response, their data travels to OpenAI or Anthropic's public APIs. It doesn't. The Einstein Trust Layer intercepts every request and routes it through Salesforce-hosted model endpoints - running inside Salesforce's own Azure tenancy, separate from any shared public infrastructure.

If you write Apex that calls the OpenAI API directly, you're completely outside ETL. No masking, no audit log, no zero data retention. That's not necessarily a problem - but it's a conscious architectural decision that requires its own data governance review, not a default-safe choice.
Similarly, when an Agentforce agent fires an action - a Flow, an Apex class, an external API call - ETL covers the LLM reasoning step, not the downstream action's behavior. The trust layer is a wrapper around the AI, not around everything the AI touches.
